CERTIFIED KETO COACH TESTIMONY

“To expand my nutritional health knowledge and make me a better coach, I was looking for a health coaching program that would provide a solid foundation in the science and functional medical aspects of Ketogenic and Carnivore diets, and Supplements. With integrity, this course by the Emmerich’s included many peer reviewed studies, medical articles and presentations to confirm the information that was being taught. Maria and Craig taught me the nutritionally healthy way to coach my clients into a new lifestyle. They share how to overcome overcome obstacles, dispel myths and mistakes which will help my clients succeed. This challenging program is very well done with step by step videos to make large amounts of information manageable. The weekly coaching calls and access to a large database of questions and answers helped me get answers to things I wasn’t sure about. Maria and Craig responded to my questions quickly if I did not find them on the coaches Q&A page.

The meal plans and thousands of recipes I was given access to changed my perspective on what it is to eat healthy and still have delicious options in any food category. Little did I know that this exceptional coaching program would change my health as well. I am no longer on thyroid medication and am no longer pre-diabetic. Maria and Craig are a true inspiration with all the hard work and creativity they put into the program and their recipes. From their teaching, I am grateful to now have the ability to help my clients on a broader level.

If you’re looking for a professional, science based, turn key program to start or enhance your coaching program and your health I would highly recommend Maria & Craig Emmerich’s Keto Adapted coaching program.” Search Camps

“I decided to get certified in keto/carnivore and just wanted to let this group know of the hard work Maria and Craig Emmerich have put into their program. The most impressive part is they share their information with everyone on this group for free. I feel their passion. I’m very excited about making this step into my health and future.

I have been following them for about 6 months after coming from another keto group that carb cycles. It was not working for me. Not only have I lost weight but I have lost pain and can finally workout and not have to take a week off because I’m so exhausted. I’m almost 55 with a c5-c6 neck fusion and I haven’t had a headache in almost 2 months. I had headaches every single day for years. I have only had 1 migraine this year.

Eternally grateful for the information you you both provide.” – Kim

Teaching Braille in PE – PHE America

Each school year, I teach a unit called “Abilities Awareness”. Making students aware of each other’s different abilities helps us become better citizens and leads to a more positive and inclusive school climate. This awareness leads to empathy and a deeper understanding of our peers’ individual learning needs resulting in a sense of belonging, community, and value in our school community. This unit is also an opportunity to address misconceptions surrounding different disabilities. In the words of Winston Churchill, “Diversity is the one true thing we all have in common. Celebrate it every day.”

Teaching Braille in PE – PHE America

Sight Reading Braille
This year, I wanted to introduce my students to the basics of the Braille alphabet. First, my student teacher, Tyler Villez, and I gave the student’s background information on Louis Braille and how he invented a form of written language for people with vision impairments, called Braille. We explained to them that Braille was a written language in which characters are represented by patterns of raised dots felt with the fingers. Our students learned that Braille, as well as enlarged print and audio, was how vision-impaired students accessed instructional materials in school.

We first taught our students how to read the Braille alphabet by sight through a fun Braille scavenger hunt game. The “Fitness Braille Alphabet” posters I used in the game can be found here. https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Braille-Alphabet-Fitness-9261345. We placed all 26 Braille alphabet posters on cones and scattered them around the gym.

Picture1

We then gave students index cards with words, written in Braille. The students had to race around the gym trying to identify each Braille letter in the word, by referencing the Braille Alphabet Fitness posters. Once they found a matching letter, they would do the exercise on the poster that corresponded to that letter. For example, if they figured out that the first letter of their word was an L then they would have to do 5 lunges before moving on. When they found all the letters to the word and did all the exercises, they had to race to me and tell me the word the letters spelled (each word was a name of a vegetable). If they were correct, they would get another word. Partners with the most completed words “won” the game but the real victory was the students experiencing a different way to read using Braille. Students learned that having a visual impairment did not mean they could not read, they just did it in a different way. Just like the word ‘disability’ does not mean inability. My intention for this activity was not to teach the entire braille code but rather to raise awareness at an introductory level.

Writing in Braille
Another game we played focused on introducing the students to write in Braille. The students used this blank alphabet template, with the above Braille Alphabet Fitness cards, and raced around the room trying to locate and fill in each cell in the alphabet. Once they found the next letter in the alphabet, they had to perform the exercise on the poster before moving on to the next letter. This was a great assessment tool and students got to take it home with them.

Picture1

Many students reported to me that they used their completed Braille alphabet key to write letters to their friends. They loved using it because their siblings and parents couldn’t read the letters since they were not familiar with the Braille alphabet!

Reading Braille by Feel
My favorite game was when my student teacher and I cut egg cartons in half and used them as blank cells to create letters in Braille.

Picture1APicture1B

We used ping pong balls as the embossed Braille dots. One partner would race down to the right side of the gym and create a letter in Braille using the egg carton and ping pong balls. They can choose any letter they wish. Their partner would be doing the same thing on the opposite side of the gym. Once they both finished creating their letter with ping pong balls, they must both cover the egg carton with a yoga mat so their partner can’t see it. They would then race and switch sides with each other, slide their hands under the yoga mat, and by feeling the ping pong balls, decide what letter it was. (Leave a key next to the egg carton for the students to use as a reference). When they think they have figured out which letter it is, they both have to meet in the middle of the gym. Each partner will take turns guessing their letter. If they are correct, they get to do 3 sit-ups to celebrate. If they are incorrect, give your partner a high-five and tell them “Nice try!” Then their partner will guess. When they are finished, they can play again.

Picture1CPicture1D

We also played site word relay races. Teams of two would be given a 4-5 letter word. The goal was for the students to create each letter of the word in Braille using egg cartons and ping pong balls. On ‘go’, they must scooter down to the other side of the gym and create the first letter of the word, then scooter back. Next, their partner would scooter down and make the 2nd letter in the word and scooter back. They would continue this pattern until they completed the entire word. Once each team finished their word, they had to do team synchronized sit-ups until all other teams finished creating their word. Teams get one point per synchronized sit-up they perform in each round.

PictureE

My students really enjoyed learning about Braille and playing games that exposed them to it. By raising the student’s awareness of different abilities we are giving students opportunities to learn from one another. They develop understanding, acceptance, and empathy and are helping to create a positive and inclusive school environment for all.

The Small Business BC Awards celebrates 20 years of BC’s top entrepreneurs

Nominations open for Lower Mainland entrepreneurs to compete for $40,000 in prize money

Small business owners across BC are invited to compete for $40,000 in prize money as SBBC celebrates the 20th anniversary of the province’s largest award contest for entrepreneurs, the Small Business BC Awards.

“Over the past 20 years, SBBC has been honored to shine a spotlight on BC’s entrepreneurs, celebrating those who put everything on the line to pursue their dreams,” said SBBC’s CEO, Tom Conway. “To mark our 20th anniversary, we’re thrilled to be returning to an in-person gala where a $40,000 prize purse will be shared among four winning businesses. To help make this year the most inspirational award ever, we’re asking the public to nominate a small business that has impacted your community.”

Every year, the Small Business BC Awards are held as an opportunity to bring attention to the small businesses having a positive impact in our province. To acknowledge and support their hard work, British Columbians are encouraged to nominate their own business or to put forward a local business that has had a strong impact on their community.

Each winner will be awarded with $10,000 in prize money, a top business title, and a one-year of free advisory support from SBBC.

The 20th Anniversary of the Small Business BC Awards features four award categories. Businesses can enter a total of two categories – the Premier’s People’s Choice Award and one of three Business Pitch Categories (Business Impact, E-Commerce, and Youth). The Premier’s People’s Choice Award is decided exclusively by a public vote. In the three business pitch categories, the top five finalists are selected based on public votes and written responses judged by internal business experts. Finalists then proceed to pitch their business to a panel of BC business leaders who decide the winner of each award category.

Premier’s People’s Choice Award

It takes a community to grow a small business. It also takes a community to win the Premier’s People’s Choice Award. This unique award category, sponsored by the Province of British Columbia, is presented to a BC-based small business that can demonstrate the unwavering and loyal support of their community.

Business Impact Awards

The Business Impact Award is sponsored by BCAA and goes to the business owner(s) making a difference in their community. Alongside an aptitude in areas like sales, marketing, logistics, finance and operations, their business has taken positive action to invest in the community and views social responsibility as an integral part of their success.

E-Commerce Experience Award

As Canadians increasingly turn to online shopping, the E-Commerce Experience Award goes to a small business that presents a frictionless experience for their customers online. Whether it’s on mobile or desktop, this business converts visitors into purchasers through an easy-to-navigate store experience and clear, measurable digital marketing strategy.

Best Youth Entrepreneur

Across British Columbia, young entrepreneurs are creating new jobs and shaping our provincial economy with their energy and ingenuity. The Best Youth Entrepreneur Award is sponsored by the Kwantlen Polytechnic University and exists to reward this entrepreneurial spirit, saluting a business leader aged 35 and under who is succeeding.

Award nominations are open from now until March 10 and can be submitted at: sbbc.co/nominate.

“Thank you Maria! Today marks one year exactly of deciding to make a change!!

I’ve lost 85 pounds, have no more swelling in my ankles, no more pain in my knees or back (I used to be in pain when I laid down at night, and woke up in pain in the morning), I can breathe when I lay down because my chest and neck aren’t suffocating me!

I have the energy and mood stability to be a great single mom to my three kids who are now 8, 6 and 4, I get out kayaking for fun, just finished a five day cycling trip, and am entered in my first Spartan obstacle race , all while maintaining a 3.85 GPA in my post secondary courses!

The scale doesn’t even matter anymore, because I’m finally living the life I want! I’m happy to get up every day and just live!

Maria and Craig Emmerich certainly understand how our bodies work best and I am eternally grateful that I started with them rather than all the crazy ways others try to “do keto”.

I can’t wait to see where I am at in another year!!” –Stephanie

Zero Carb Mozzarella Sticks – Maria Mind Body Health

If you haven’t noticed, I do not allow advertising on my site.

I just didn’t agree with some of the products that were advertised. They were keto products, but they were unhealthy and I would never personally eat most of the products. It was hard to say no to blog advertisements; they pay thousands of dollars a month, but I just feel uncomfortable about having the products I didn’t recommend on my website.

Instead, I have created a shopping list where you can find all the healthy ingredients that are difficult to find in grocery stores (and if you do find them, they are often very expensive).

I have done a lot of detective work and found the lowest prices on for all of the products I use and love. Everything from food, pantry items, kitchen tools, supplements, and skin products are on my list.

I rarely waste time in the grocery store because I find everything online for a way better price!

All you have to do is click on the words in my recipe and it will take you right to the correct item. If you add them to your cart I get a tiny commission that helps me afford to keep practicing recipes (Recipe experimenting can cost me a fortune!…but I love helping!).

I also have GREAT HOLIDAY GIFT IDEAS on the list!

Happy Shopping and THANK YOU for all your support!!!

Zero Carb Mozzarella Sticks

  1. Preheat the oven or an air fryer to 400°F.
  2. Place the ground beef in a large bowl and season with the salt. Use your hands to combine well. Divide the beef into 8 equal portions and form each portion into a ¼-inch-thick rectangle, about 3½ inches by 2 inches.
  3. Place one string of cheese in the center of a patty. Use your fingers to seal the patty around the cheese; be sure to seal the edges well or the cheese will melt out. Repeat with the remaining patties and cheese. Wrap a slice of bacon around the entire patty, then secure the ends of the bacon with tooth picks. Repeat with the remaining patties and pieces of bacon.
  4. Place the wrapped patties on a rimmed baking sheet lined with parchment paper if using the oven or in the air fryer basket in a single layer if using an air fryer and bake or cook for about 8 minutes, flipping after 4 minutes, until the bacon is cooked to your liking.
  5. Remove the mozzarella sticks from the oven or air fryer and let cool for a few minutes before consuming or the melted cheese will burn your mouth.
  6. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. To reheat, place in a preheated 400°F oven or air fryer for about 3 minutes, or until heated through.

Hi Maria and Craig,

I just wanted to update you on our success! I am the one who asked if you would add two seats so I could bring my daughter to your PSMF class at your home.

Jozie is 12 and has Turners Syndrome and issues of weight and eating have been a struggle for her entire life. Guess what?! She is successful and loves this way of eating! She is experiencing being full and I always say “she doesn’t have a full switch”!

Also, she is on daily shots for growth for her TS and hasn’t been growing well even with them. Well, over the last 44 days she grew an inch and she lost 10lbs!!

The supplements from your personal health assessment and your way of Keto have been nothing but amazing! We didn’t care about the weight loss but figured some would happen. Her self-esteem, her confidence, and her success in committing to this lifestyle is just giving her so much! Thank you, thank you, thank you. I have been doing it side by side with her so we could be a team and the benefits I am seeing are also nothing short of amazing. I have lost 17lbs and still going.

Most importantly for me I am hanging on to my gallbladder and seeing so many other health improvements! Like my allergies are even non-existent since I converted – who knew?!

Thank you for going out of your way to add two seats that day…you literally changed our lives in ways I can’t put all in to words.” – Linda

A Perceived Philosophical Conflict – PHE America

A Perceived Philosophical Conflict – PHE America

I am the only female in my high school PE department. It’s been this way for 20 years. The one time another female came in she tried to out-alpha the football coach and got removed from teaching PE and placed in Health. I think she might have taught one section of PE in the two years she was here, and I think it was Adapted PE. Since we’ve had a fully working weight room, it was always paired with the football coach. We got a new one this year, the fifth in my tenure working at this same high school. As soon as I heard he teaches through an app I put my judgmental hat on. Without any notion of what he does or how he does it, I decided we were adversaries.

exc_WEBad_SES_750x182_21_vs2

Coaches who also teach a class based on using your body’s trend toward it being visually productive. It is much more about ‘making sure’ everyone is doing what they are ‘supposed’ to be doing and ‘working hard’. The culture of sport (and the newer sport-as-fitness) revolves around the premise of effort equals results. It dictates that you must remove the sensation to be successful. You are battling your body, not listening to or being led by it.

I experienced this system, understood this system, but was ultimately left crippled by this system (both literally and figuratively). As I watched the kids being trained the same way, down the same singular path, I knew I had to at least try to offer them an alternative (which, I have since learned, is not a duality but a harmonious integration). For the last decade, I have been building up the mental side of physicality. The feeling, the intention, that a how and why can be more exhilarating than checking off the what.

machines_weight_weights_lifting_weights_gym_gymnasium_sports_workout-1135753.jpg!d

Cultivating autonomous beings that feel safe and supported enough to NOT go along with the plan (and being able to create their own) does not vibe with the current sentiment that permeates most weight rooms (or gymnasiums). Since most PE teachers are also coaches, the idea behind a collective effort makes perfect sense. It takes someone outside (on the other side of?) glorified sports culture to begin to perceive and promote individual agency as a strength and not a threat to compliance.

There is a protectiveness that seeps into being ‘the only one’. The only woman, the only non-coach, the only one looking outside of sports and fitness, the only one who built their curriculum instead of borrowing it. To make something is to believe it is worth the effort, and to craft, something is to be deliberate on the details that make it valuable. All of this can be proven with confidence because you don’t check out the other guy’s stuff in creation mode. You only see and know what you do.

“Support”, as I know it, is actually neglect and ignorance. ‘Not bothering me’ is the best I can hope for. Things survive best when you leave them alone. They figure it out. But surviving is not the same process as improving. Growing and evolving takes reflection and perspective — other than your own. Here is where I enter back into the story...

On one particularly beloved morning meeting, the department (3.5 guys and myself) got together in the guy’s locker room office to discuss the scope and sequence of Physical Education at the high school. Now that we were unified into one high school, a progression of beginner through advanced classes was proposed. The general outline was that we’d need an Introductory PE class to funnel every student into and that the second semester they would get to choose an option that best suits them. The current options to select from would be Games & Practice (my section), Team Sports, or Weight Lifting.

Screen Shot 2021-04-05 at 7.57.37 PM

What should be offered in this ‘new basics’ class (not necessarily who was going to teach it) was a particular point of contention. We agreed that it should be a sampling of the disciplines and of the ‘advanced’ courses proposed. To do so, and to best emulate the spaces each progression would exist in, I argued that Intro would need to be able to use the weight room (an issue because Weights are offered pretty much every period).

When asked how long I would need, I responded with two weeks. Aside from the assumption that I would be teaching this freshman class (I do not mind at all that every student must go through me), I could tell by the look on his face that not having access to his domain was troubling. He then explained how you could build strength without the weight room and hinted that fitness needs to be a fundamental part of this class.

weight_lifting_fitness_exercise_muscle_strength_attractive_dumbbell_heavy-915878.jpg!d

There was A LOT about this I had issues with, but the biggest part was the underlying (and spoken) current of “We all need to align to [my] practices since I am the weights teacher and this is where many will end up.” When I tried to explain how there could be different philosophies to teach loaded movements, he looked at me with a disdain and said “a fundamental squat pattern is a fundamental squat pattern.” When I tried to grab that there isn’t one type of squat, a third gentleman in the group (sweet, neutral Craig) asked, “How would you differentiate it?”. I revised with, “foot position, twisting, what the torso is doing, where the load or resistance might be… there are literally a million things you can tinker with…”

Screen Shot 2021-08-24 at 2.27.47 PM

I was frustrated at this line of questioning and/or the need to defend myself, so I just kind of stopped talking. In hindsight, I know he was just trying to get me to tell him so the weights guy would have an understanding, but it felt like an impasse. We ended the meeting shortly thereafter, but I was peeved as I left. I relayed the situation to my partner and other than pointing out the toxic masculinity (of my version), she asked whether or not there is a department chair that sorts out what is needed to be taught outside these differences of opinion/technique.

Here is a sample of our exchanges:

Picture1

[Note the time difference between these two pics.]

I stewed on it in the back of my mind for the next couple of periods. I also caught up with Craig and expressed my gratitude for his attempts at mediation:

Picture2

Besides the excellent transition in the last sentence, I knew she was right. It pained me to be part of the problem.

I used the last few minutes of prepare to pen the following email and sent it off. Considering my olive branch pointed and outstretched, I went about my business. I got a simple reply four days later. I get that coaches are busy and have very little time between the job and the bonus job.

Picture3

This email changed everything. He observed me on a Wednesday – a purposeful non-traditional day where we were in the mat room. The topics were hips, rotation, and squatting. [I make my points when I can.] We had the lights off, and he sat at one of the tables and occasionally took notes.

I observed him a few periods later, in his seriously ‘worst’ class. I tried hard to look for what was happening, not what was wrong. Everyone and I mean everyone, was active. They knew what to do and they did it. There was this symphony of positioning and placement, cycles of movement into certain areas of the large space. No one got distracted by their phone. They checked it (the app) quickly and went right back to work. If this was his worst I can only imagine what the other classes were like. He circulated and spoke with kids, on top of the slightest point of excessive idleness or rest.

They did stretch as a class to start, which I appreciated. I told him it was well structured and that they seemed eager and on task. He said he thought it was a pretty good day. On our way back in, he asked if I ever had a hard time pulling the kids back together from ‘independent time’ (I gave them rollers to start and had them do what they wished with them for about five minutes. When I asked at the five-minute mark if they needed more time, quite a few revised yes.Since this agreed with my visual check of use — and reminders of what one could do in the one-time lesson we had two weeks ago — I gave them a few more before leading them through the day’s exploration and investigation). I responded that I did not because they are the ones that set the time. If I notice that the majority don’t know what to do and aren’t trying anything, I shorten the independent section for that group on that day.

It was in these shared moments that we both saw that the other knew what they were doing and that certain kids responded to certain types of setups and systems. Neither is wrong and neither is superior. It’s just a way that works. Now when we see each other in the hall or on our way to the laundry room, we smile. We exchange barbs and acknowledge hellos. We hold the door open for the other when our hands are full, and look out for one another’s students. It’s a better place to work, and we impart an equally useful experience. There is such a change when outcasts feel a part of it. The separation is often in their minds. The climate we create for our kids is often the very one we wish for ourselves. For the outliers who are out to change the world, opportunity resides in your very own building, and often right next door.
