Trump Bans Three News Outlets From White House Access
Donald Trump announced on Friday that he is banning three major news outlets — CNN, MS NOW, and Politico — from White House access, escalating his ongoing confrontation with the independent press.
Trump’s Media Ban Threat
Trump accused the outlets of spreading “fake stories and lies” in a social media post, adding that they should not be allowed to “write and broadcast continuously FAKE STORIES AND LIES when covering the President of the United States.”
He went on to warn that other news organizations could face similar restrictions, specifically naming the New York Times and Washington Post as outlets he considers to be spreading “fake news.” Representatives from all three banned outlets were seen working in the White House on Friday afternoon, after which the White House informed them that their access would be revoked starting Saturday, according to a report by Fox News citing an unnamed senior White House official.
Trump did not cite a specific incident that led to the ban, telling reporters in the Oval Office, “It’s really just an accumulation of stories over the years.” He added, “I’m not required to let them into my house, the people’s house.”
Courts have historically granted presidents broad discretion over selective access to events such as Oval Office meetings and small press gatherings. However, broader exclusions from publicly available White House facilities or credentials could face stronger scrutiny under the First Amendment and due process protections.
Outlets Vow to Fight Back
MS NOW, in a statement released Saturday, said it would continue covering the Trump administration and intends to “take all necessary steps to defend our rights flowing from the First Amendment and the essential role of a free press in our democracy.” CNN also pushed back, stating it supports its journalists covering the White House and asserting, “We have the right, under the Constitution of the United States, to conduct this coverage without obstruction or interference from the government.”
“If the restriction threatened by President Trump is implemented, it will constitute an unlawful attack on this fundamental and constitutionally protected right,” CNN added. Politico published on X that it would “continue to cover the current White House with fairness and the future with integrity,” and pledged to “vigorously defend our rights under the First Amendment against any attempt to restrict them.”

Seth Stern, director of advocacy at the Freedom of the Press Foundation, called Trump’s threat “a brazen violation of the First Amendment,” adding, “It is hard to imagine a more blatant infringement than Trump banning news media from the White House because they criticize the government.”
Trump’s relationship with the press has been strained since his days as a New York real estate developer, when he cultivated favorable coverage in the city’s tabloid newspapers. After rising to national prominence through reality television, he launched a more aggressive campaign against critical media during his first term, repeatedly urging supporters to boycott networks and shows that mocked or criticized him. His administration also attempted to revoke the White House credentials of several journalists, including Brian Karem of Playboy and Jim Acosta of CNN, though federal courts ordered their reinstatement.
The current ban comes as Trump faces declining approval ratings amid a deepening conflict with Iran that has driven up energy prices. Recent polling by Reuters/Ipsos shows public opinion turning against Republicans ahead of the November 3 midterm elections, where Trump-aligned candidates are defending narrow majorities in Congress.
White House Press Access Shifts Under Trump
The White House has gradually replaced longtime credentialed reporters from major networks with correspondents from outlets viewed as more supportive of the administration. This realignment reflects a broader effort to reshape how the presidency communicates with the public.
Press briefings have become less frequent, and when they occur, only a select group of journalists is invited. Those excluded often include reporters from organizations that have published investigative pieces or critical coverage of Trump’s policies or personal conduct.
Despite the restrictions, several major outlets continue to file stories based on anonymous sources within the executive branch.
