How Amazon Is Transforming Small Businesses

What do former US Marines, stay-at-home moms, retirees and Chinese business veterans all have in common? You’ve probably bought something from them on Amazon.

Third-party sellers, people who sell their products through Amazon’s marketplace, come from every walk of life and increasingly make up more and more of the online giant’s sales. Amazon launched its third-party marketplace in 2000, allowing small business owners to put their products on Amazon (for a price). There are now millions of third-party sellers on the site, and third-party sales make up about 60% of Amazon’s physical product sales, Jeff Bezos told the House of Representatives in 2020.

Third-party sellers at the center of Amazon’s ecosystem––and the debate around the company’s complicated place in the world. Is Amazon exploiting these small businesses or lifting them up?

Moira Weigel, an assistant professor of communication studies at Northeastern University, says it’s not that simple.

“It’s transforming what a small business is,” Weigel says.

Weigel and her graduate research assistant Zhaozhou Dai spent the last two years talking with third-party sellers across the global e-commerce market, charting Amazon’s impact on a “hidden, yet really important part of the global consumer economy.” Her report, “Amazon’s Trickle Down Monopoly,” published this week in Data & Society, is the culmination of that work.

“To be an Amazon seller does not look much like running the mom-and-pop corner store that politicians and pundits evoke when they talk about American small business,” she adds. “As several of my interviewees put it, it typically looks more like daytrading—interpreting and trying to speculate on global data flows that you experience primarily through screens.”

The impact of that shift goes beyond Amazon and its third-party sellers. Weigel says the US, China and EU place “an enormous amount of faith” in small businesses and entrepreneurs to help remedy structural inequities and create opportunities for people.

“Entrepreneurship is a state project,” Weigel says. “We have low interest rate loans, we have tax breaks, we have subsidies for small businesses. If Amazon’s market dominance is fundamentally transforming what a small business is, that is a matter of public interest.”

For third-party sellers, the advantages of selling on Amazon are clear: They gain access to the largest online marketplace in the world. All they have to do is supply their inventory––and pay Amazon to ship, store, list and advertise it. The whole enterprise is low-risk for Amazon and high-risk, high-reward for sellers.

Carnivore Deviled Eggs – Maria Mind Body Health

I love deviled eggs! Who doesn’t?

Deviled eggs are always the first thing to disappear when I bring them to parties!

When I was on the carnivore tv show in Costa Rica, I was also the chef. I wanted to make delicious food, not just steak for the carnivores. So I made the best deviled eggs and they were completely carnivore!

To make my carnivore deviled eggs you can use my bacon mayo or my butter mayo recipe! Either works great and tastes delicious!

Carnivore Deviled Eggs

  • Place the eggs in a large saucepan and cover with cold water. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, then cover the pan and remove it from the heat. Allow the eggs to cook in the hot water for 11 minutes.

  • Meanwhile, cook the bacon. Heat a cast-iron skillet over high heat. Place the diced bacon in the hot skillet and cook, stirring often with a wooden spoon, for 4 minutes, or until cooked to your liking. Remove the bacon from the skillet, leaving the drippings in the pan, and place the bacon on a paper towel–lined plate to drain.

  • Place the ground beef in the skillet with the bacon drippings and cook over medium heat, crumbling the meat with a wooden spoon to break up the clumps, until the beef is browned and cooked through, 3 to 4 minutes. Remove the pan from the heat and set aside.

  • After the eggs have been cooked, drain the water and rinse the eggs under very cold running water for a minute or two to stop the cooking. Peel the boiled eggs and cut them in half lengthwise.

  • Carefully remove the egg yolks and place them in a medium bowl (or a mini food processor). Mash the yolks with a fork until they have the texture of very fine crumbles. Add the mayonnaise, fish sauce (if using), and salt and mix with the fork until evenly combined. Add the cooked beef and stir gently to combine.

  • Fill the egg white halves with the yolk mixture. Garnish with the bacon and serve. Store extras in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

Leptin and Weight Loss – Maria Mind Body Health

Did you ever wonder why it is easier to gain weight than keeping it off?

The key to this is in the fat cells where a powerful hormone is produced called leptin. Leptin signals the brain to regulate the metabolism in order to store or burn fat.

Leptin is a hormone produced by fat cells that helps regulate appetite and energy expenditure. When leptin levels are high, it signals to the brain that the body has enough energy and can stop eating. However, when the body becomes resistant to leptin, this signaling system breaks down, leading to increased appetite and decreased energy expenditure. In this blog post, we will discuss some tips on improving leptin sensitivity.

WEIGHT LOSS STRUGGLES

85% of people who lose weight end up regaining weight because the “metabolic thermostat” of the body, leptin, is reset upward automatically. When people lose weight, leptin production decreases, which causes people to regain the lost weight. This protein hormone is derived from fat cells so when you lose fat, leptin levels drop. When you gain fat, leptin levels rise. Once leptin is secreted by your fat cells, it travels to the hypothalamus; which controls eating behavior. Once it’s there, leptin activates anorectic nerve cells, which decreases your appetite. At the same time, leptin stops cells from stimulating your appetite. To put it simply, when leptin levels drop, you get hungry. When they go up, you feel full. Leptin communicates directly to your brain, telling the brain how much fat is in storage. It controls appetite, energy, and metabolic rate. Leptin problems are the primary reason for food cravings, overeating, slow metabolism, food obsession and heart disease.

You’d think that having extra fat stores creates more leptin, but that is where an interesting mystery comes into play. 98% of those who are significantly overweight are leptin-resistant. Most defects in leptin signaling may lead to obesity, overeating and less energy expenditure. Leptin-resistance is similar to insulin-resistance in that it occurs after being overexposed to high levels of the hormone. At this point, the body no longer responds to the hormone. Much like high blood sugar levels result in surges in insulin, sugar metabolized in fat cells causes the fat to release surges in leptin. Over time, leptin-resistance may develop.

Leptin resistance occurs when the body no longer responds to leptin, leading to increased appetite and decreased energy expenditure. In this blog post, we will discuss what leptin resistance is, what causes it, and how to treat it.

Leptin Resistance and High Fat Keto/Carnivore

This is also why so many people don’t lose weight on high fat keto or carnivore. Or they lose a little weight then stall. If you are overweight or obese, you are likely leptin resistant so don’t get the “I’m full” signal like you should. So you overeat and overeat on fat means less of your own body fat burned for fuel. You have to dial the dietary fat down so you lose more body fat. Losing body fat will then help reverse the leptin resistance and help you feel full quicker.

What is Leptin Resistance?

Leptin resistance is a condition in which the body no longer responds to leptin. Leptin is released by fat cells and travels to the brain to signal that the body has enough energy stores and that it can stop eating. However, when the body becomes resistant to leptin, this signaling system breaks down, and the brain no longer receives the message that the body has enough energy. This leads to increased appetite and decreased energy expenditure, which can contribute to weight gain and obesity.

What Causes Leptin Resistance?

There are several factors that can contribute to leptin resistance. One of the main causes is obesity. When the body has excess fat, it produces more leptin. Over time, the body becomes resistant to leptin, and the signaling system breaks down. Other factors that can contribute to leptin resistance include a high-fat diet, inflammation, and genetics.

How to Eat to Reverse Leptin Resistance

The best way to reduce your chances of diabetes is to avoid surges in leptin; which is the leading cause of leptin-resistance. Eating the typical American diet, full of refined sugars and other processed foods, is a guaranteed way to cause unwanted surges. Focusing your diet on simple, real unprocessed foods is the best way to prevent leptin resistance.

One food to help with leptin is protein. Protein improves leptin sensitivity, which lowers calorie intake by helping you feel full faster. Increase your protein to at least 30 grams for breakfast and at least another 60 throughout the day. Choose quality proteins like salmon, grass fed meat, and free-range eggs!

HOW TO IMPROVE LEPTIN SENSITIVITY

1. Reduce Calorie Intake

4. Get Enough Sleep

A HUGE piece of healing leptin resistance and improving leptin sensitivity is sleep! Getting enough sleep is also important for improving leptin sensitivity. Lack of sleep can disrupt hormones, including leptin, and contribute to insulin resistance. Aim for 7-8 hours of sleep per night to improve leptin sensitivity and overall health.

5. Reduce Stress

Chronic stress can also contribute to leptin resistance. Stress can lead to inflammation and disrupt hormone balance, both of which can contribute to leptin resistance. Finding ways to reduce stress, such as meditation, yoga, or spending time in nature, can improve leptin sensitivity.

In conclusion, improving leptin sensitivity is important for regulating appetite and energy expenditure. By reducing calorie intake, prioritizing protein intake, exercising regularly, getting enough sleep, and reducing stress, it is possible to improve leptin sensitivity and promote a healthy weight. The best thing you can do to reverse leptin resistance is to shrink your fat cells by losing body fat.

The BEST Homemade Deli Meat

So many of you are loving my easy Homemade Deli Meat recipe, I couldn’t wait to share my new and improved BEST homemade deli meat recipe with all of you!

HOW TO MAKE THE BEST DELI MEAT IN AN INSTANT POT

If you don’t want to go through the trouble of boiling a pot of water for an hour, you can use an Instant Pot!

Spray 2 wide mouth canning jars with avocado oil spray and place the pureed chicken into them. Put on lids onto the jars. Pour a cup of water into the bottom of the Instant Pot. Place a trivet into the bottom and place the jars on the trivet. Press Manual and pressure cook for 20 minutes. Once finished, place the jars in the fridge for 8 hours before removing and slicing.

TIPS ON MAKING HOMEMADE DELI MEAT

As you can see in my photos of my easy homemade deli meat, I have a lot of holes. This is user error. I should have pressed the pureed chicken into the meat press as I added it. After I made a few batches, I found that when I packed it tightly, I didn’t get the holes.

This is why I also decided to add Further Food gelatin to the deli meat!

Further Food gelatin made the deli meat really tender and the texture was just like store bought deli meat but with a much fresher flavour.

I always stock my pantry with Further Food gelatin and collagen! They have so many different flavors of collagen that really make my recipes extra delicious! I know it looks crazy, but I seriously use Further Food in most of my recipes!

The BEST Homemade Deli Meat

Prep Time 10 min

Cook Time 1 hr

  • Place the chicken, water, gelatin, salt and seasonings into a food processor and pulse until smooth.

  • Spray the inside of the deli meat press with avocado oil spray and place the mixture into the press. Press down firmly.

  • Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Place the meat press into the water and boil on a low simmer for 1 hour or until the internal temperature reaches 158 degrees F.

  • Place the unopened container in the fridge for 10 hours or overnight. Remove and slice. Enjoy as a sandwich with my protein sparing bread recipe or dehydrate in an oven or dehydrator for 6 hours on lowest temperature (155 degrees F) to make protein chips!

Keto Peanut Butter Muffins with Chocolate Frosting

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F and line a 12 well muffin pan with cupcake paper liners.

  • Place the peanut butter, butter and natural sweetener in a large bowl and use a hand mixer to combine well. Add the eggs and mix until well combined. Add the protein powder, baking powder, and salt and stir until well combined. Add the vanilla and stir well. Divide the mixture evenly into the muffin cups. Place in the oven to bake for 16-20 minutes or until baked through.

  • Meanwhile make the frosting by placing the butter in a large bowl (or stand mixer) and beat on high until light and fluffy. Add the natural sweetener and cocoa powder and mix well. Add the heavy cream and vanilla and mix until well combined. Taste and adjust sweetness to your liking. Once the muffins are completely cool, frost with the chocolate frosting. Store extras in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 6 days.
