Regina, June 5, 2023 – On behalf of over 4,000 small businesses in Saskatchewan, the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) has written a letter to Saskatchewan’s Minister of Finance, urging the province to freeze the small business tax rate at 0% to give more businesses a chance to recover.
Have you ever noticed after a night of poor sleep, are you extra hungry? Do you often fall off your diet after a poor night of sleep?
After a poor night of sleep, your blood sugars are automatically higher causing you to become hungrier, you crave carbohydrates and you often gain weight over consecutive nights of poor sleep.
Many people gain weight in the summer and one main reason is that they skimp on sleep. It’s easy to get 8-10 hours of sleep when it gets dark out at 4:30pm in January, but who wants to go to bed when it’s still light out?
I worked with a lot of gastric bypass patients and in the past, we used to think that they had sleep apnea after they gained weight BUT we now know that the lack of sleep = leptin resistance = don’t feel the sense of feeling full = overeating = weight gain! bad bad bad.
Often times I talk with clients on the phone and they tell me they are eating from my meal plans but their blood sugars are still high.
My first question is “How many hours did you sleep?” There is a huge connection to our health and sleep. Just getting 6 hours at night isn’t going to help heal you in the way you need!
Many studies connect a link between sleep and the hormones that manipulate our eating behavior; which are ghrelin and leptin. Have you ever experienced a sleepless night followed by a day when no matter what you say you never feel satisfied? I hate that! This is the outcome when leptin and ghrelin get out of balance. Leptin and ghrelin work like a “check and balance” that manages hunger and fullness. Ghrelin, produced in the stomach, increases appetite, while leptin, produced in fat cells, sends a message to our brain when we are full.
Lack of sleep causes ghrelin levels to increase and your leptin levels to decrease. This imbalance causes us to crave food intensely and never feel full. The worst part is that we don’t crave broccoli, we crave high calorie sweets and starchy foods. Over time, this imbalance can easily lead to long-term weight gain.
Getting at least 8 hours of restful sleep can be key to health, weight loss, mental clarity and so much more. One of the best ways to ensure a good restful night of sleep is to get your circadian clock in rhythm and get your body to naturally produce melatonin at the right times.
Our eye has a receptor that responds to the presence of light and signals the SCN (suprachiasmatic nucleus) in our brain. We have known that blue light effects the production of melatonin but it is now shown that some wavelengths of green light also effect melatonin production. The activation of the SCN (presence of blue and green lights in the eye) prevents the pineal gland from producing melatonin, the hormone that signals sleep or drowsiness. The lack of blue light in the eye signals the pineal gland to produce melatonin which induces drowsiness and natural sleep cycles. This diagram shows this process.

So it is critical that we support our circadian rhythms to enable good sleep cycles. But today we are bombarded by these wavelengths of blue and green light all day long.
In the evening when the sun is down and we should naturally be setting our circadian clocks for sleep, we have interior lights, computer screens, TVs, phones and more that are bombarding our eyes with these critical blue and green wavelengths of light and interrupting us circadian clocks. If you have trouble falling asleep, adding glasses that block these wavelengths of blue and green light can be the key to naturally falling asleep better and getting better sleep.
We have written about this for a while. A few years ago in our “The 30 Day Ketogenic Cleanse” book and more recently in our book “Keto.”. But with further understanding of how blue AND green light at certain wavelengths can effect sleep, we searched for glasses that would block all the wavelengths to enable natural sleep cycles to improve.
Key takeaways from studies on the eye light receptor:
446–477nm was identified as having the strongest effect on melatonin suppression. You need to make sure 100% from 446-477nm is blocked after dark
Polychromatic action spectra were reasonably consistent in indicating that the spectral region between 450 and 550nm provides the strongest stimulation of circadian and neuroendocrine responses. What this means is the wavelengths of light between 400-550nm should be completely blocked for optimal melatonin secretion after dark.
Past studies have shown that the peak wavelength sensitivity was 555nm (Rodieck, 1998) (5). Previous data (Brainard et al, 2001) (6) and those presented in the 2001 study (4) do not support this hypothesis. The results clearly demonstrate that 555nm is significantly weaker in suppressing melatonin. This is a great study for determining the optimal range of artificial light to block after dark and the study results and graphs clearly indicate that the major disruption zone for melatonin is between 400-550nm with a peak between 446-477nm. It is clear we must block 100% blue and green light from 400-550nm to have optimal melatonin secretion after dark. Almost every blue light blocking pair of glasses on the market does not do this. A cross section of test results from a spectrometer has been released that shows just this (7).
We searched for a company that made glasses that blocked 100% of these blue and green wavelengths. We founded the company called Bon Charge. They make glasses that block 100% of the blue and green wavelengths needed to naturally allow your body to produce melatonin.
When you get a good night’s rest your body has adequate time to repair and rejuvenate.
Avoid sugar and foods high in carbohydrates, such as popcorn, chips and ice cream, especially in the evening hours. It causes low quality sleep and it stalls our metabolism. When blood sugar rises too much, it falls too low, causing you to wake up because of low blood sugar and hunger.
Add in salt before bedtime. When people start the keto diet, or start to do longer fasting, sleep often suffers. One reason is because the lack of sodium levels in the evening really interferes with quality sleep!
Follow a regular sleep schedule by going to bed and rising at the same time. I know I sound like a loser, but I’m usually in bed by 8:30pm and rise at 6am.
Before bed do something to relax your muscles and your mind (meditation, gentle stretching, yoga or deep breathing exercises).
Reduce or eliminate caffeine (chocolate has caffeine, so beware). Despite working at coffee shops since I was 15 years old, I cut out all coffee and caffeine and never felt better!
Darken your bedroom with heavy drapes. We have black-out blinds.
Turn the heat down. We often sleep with the windows cracked open even in the winter; I sleep the best at about 57-60 degrees.
Try cold therapy before bed. I do cold therapy at night to cool my body down to help with mitochondria health and increasing sleep.
Women: Get your progesterone level tested. I often see women who can fall asleep, but wake up in the middle of the night. I have helped copious amounts of women get good sleep with natural supplements to help with hormone health.
WEAR BON CHARGE blue blocking glasses! I usually put my BON CHARGE blue blocking glasses on around 5pm. Yep, 5pm! It is best to stop blocking all the blue light about 2-3 hours before bedtime to allow the body to naturally produce melatonin. With stylish blue blocking glasses you can start wearing them in the evening while still hanging out with friends. They even make a good conversation starter! You are biohacking your sleep. 🙂
It’s funny how there are many recipes that my family enjoys weekly but I have never written recipes for them. These protein sparing chai ice pops are one of them. My son Kai begs for these ice pops all the time!
They are so easy to make, we always have them in the freezer. I love that I have an easy protein-packed treat for my kids (and myself!) when hunger strikes!
HOW TO MAKE PROTEIN SPARING CHAI ICE POPS
To make Kai’s protein sparing chai ice pops, I used Equip vanilla Prime Protein powder!
It works great for making recipes like my protein sparing chai ice pops. If you are hungry in the afternoon and are looking for protein but you don’t want a piece of meat, go to your freezer and enjoy one of Kai’s favorite treats! These Chai Ice Pops are high in protein and low in calories!
Equip Prime protein does things right! They care about the health of their customers! The vanilla Prime Protein powder is an all-natural, comes from 100% grass-fed beef protein powder with only 3 ingredients: grass fed beef, coconut cream powder, natural flavour, and stevia. No fillers, no additives, no chemicals and it’s so delicious!
I love Equip Prime Protein powder so much, I always have it packed in my carry on so I can make a quick shake when I am on a long flight!
It’s my dear friend Halle Berry’s birthday on August 14th but with the 4th of July coming soon, I thought I must share my special recipe for Halle Berry Bomb Pops this month!
As many of you know, I had the great pleasure of making friends with the beautiful Halle Berry and she wrote the forward for my Sugar Free Kids cookbook!
I wanted to write a very special keto recipe for Halle Berry’s birthday so my boys and I created Halle Berry Bomb Pops which is a recipe found in my Sugar Free Kids cookbook!
Halle Berry is the sweetest and if you make my Halle Berry Bomb Pops, make sure to post a photo and tag Halle so she can see how much we all adore her! I know it will make her day!
My Halle Berry Bomb pops are a riff on the classic red, white, and blue Bomb Pop and are a great way to sneak in healthy protein from the yogurt! I use my homemade yogurt recipe, which is the lowest in carbs and sugar. If you use a store bought yogurt, look for a brand low in carbs and no added sugar.
HOW TO MAKE HALLE BERRY BOMB POPS
To make my keto bomb pops, I used Equip Prime Protein!
Equip Prime Protein powder is my favorite protein powder because it is dairy free and it is made from beef which is the most nutrient-dense food! I also love it because it tastes AMAZING! It’s so awesome to have a Bomb Pop that’s healthy and packed with protein!

People with physical disabilities hold limited positions as scholars, teachers, or leaders in physical education, recreation, and sports. Perhaps the reason is that the field is flooded with able-bodied people who think they know best. But do they? Michael Oliver, imminent writer, and scholar argued that people with physical disabilities should be the only ones in the field of disability studies because they have a bodily experience with disabilities. The following five-part article series shares the perspective of a scholar in the field of sports disability who has his own physical limitations. In each article, he discusses a different issue a person with a physical disability faces in the profession of physical education, recreation and sport.
Part V: Just Talk to Me
Traumatic Brain Injuries can manifest in many ways depending on the severity and the onset of the injury. For example, my severe injury occurred when I was six months. The brain at six months has great plasticity to generate new neurons, which defines who I am today. I talk and walk, which medical authorities doubted would happen. Additionally, years of therapy and a loving, supportive family brought success. However, a visible difference exists in how my body moves. My right side is affected. When I walk my right leg swings out wider than my left. To an able-bodied person, it may seem to be a limp, which is not the reality. Actually, my toes need to clear the floor and because of this, I wear a leg brace. My right arm and hand hang at my side a bit differently and my hand is either in a clenched fist or my fingers are spread apart at different angles. I must think to use my right hand. Furthermore, I have a hard time pronouncing certain words and it takes a lot of effort. My eye has exotropia which means my eyes are misaligned and sometimes my right eye will wander outward.
People lamentably assume things about me because of how I look and how I move. I often notice people staring at me with what I call, “The Look.” I’m not sure whatThe Look” means since there is seldom any conversation, just “The Look.” My body may be awkward. I am not, but mentally or physically incapable, nor should I be pitied for my poor quality of life. One can have a physical disability and have a good quality of life. Most strangers assume that quality of life does not exist because they do not engage in conversation with me about this topic.
Aimee Mullins, a double amputee, in her TED Talk My 12 pairs of legs found something profound when doing a demonstration for a group of children. She had asked that the children come with no adults. She said, “Let the children come and talk to me.” In those ten minutes with the children exploring her legs she went from someone who the children probably would have been trained to ignore and fear for a person who had the potential to become a superhuman.
Able-bodied people fear people with physical disabilities and because they fear us, we never get the chance to show our humanity. Humanity is lost when eye contact is made and then broken by the able-bodied person who looks away. We have much to offer. I am a professional in movement sciences, give me a chance. Challenge yourself. The next time you find yourself staring, stopping, starting a conversation. Be open to a new experience. People with physical disabilities have much to share. You may find a new friend, with a totally different perspective.

Mastercard Center for Inclusive Growth President Shamina Singh joins Yahoo Finance Live to discuss the company’s commitment to women-owned small businesses and discusses some of the challenges small business owners face.
Video Transcripts
[AUDIO LOGO]
RACHELLE AKUFFO: Mastercard is doubling down on its commitment to financial inclusion. Announcing that it’s already reached its 2025 goal of providing 25 million female entrepreneurs with solutions to help grow their businesses. Shamina Singh, Mastercard center for inclusive growth president, joins us now. Great to see you again, Shamina. So–
SHAMINA SINGH: Nice to see you, Rachelle.
RACHELLE AKUFFO: –talk about these landmarks. Very good to see you. Talk about this landmark that was reached because this wasn’t supposed to get– this landmark wasn’t supposed to hit until 2025.
SHAMINA SINGH: Well, we’re really fortunate that we like many people, didn’t know that the pandemic was coming, but we prepared in advance. And it happened to be in the right place at the right time to ensure that women entrepreneurs, women small business owners, received the support they needed to not only open some small businesses but grow them. And get through the pandemic and then come out even stronger than before. So we’re really proud of the achievement but really grateful that we were able to provide those kinds of resources to the amazing women who need them.
RACHELLE AKUFFO: And so in terms of the stories that stand out when you think about the impact, the economic impact that this can have for these women and the broader community, what sort of stories stand out for you?
SHAMINA SINGH: Well, it’s really– the way I think about it is when you invest in women entrepreneurs, think about it as they pay it back and they pay it forward. They pay it back because their loan repayment rates are over 90% normally for the size and the amount of loans that they are taking. So they’re really big risks because they paid the loan back, and they pay it forward.
What we also know is that when you invest in a woman entrepreneur, she pays it forward to her family, to her community, to all of the things that surround her and her small business. So the impact of investing in a woman entrepreneur is double, triple, quadruple what you get when you invest in a single entrepreneur.
RACHELLE AKUFFO: And I want to ask you because, obviously, we’re in an era of tighter lending conditions. And I know that it’s a philanthropic side, but it’s also a corporate side and really a partnership here. Have you seen any sort of pullback or perhaps more strategic investments in this space?
SHAMINA SINGH: Yeah, it’s interesting because– and that’s why I think it’s important to say that it is a combination of commercial and philanthropic activity coming out of Mastercard. Because, again, during this time of transition, we have to make sure that we’re using every tool and lever at our disposal to ensure that women small business owners and all small business owners come out of this transition period on the other side.
And so for the commercial side, we have a whole set of solutions. From the philanthropic side, we have a whole set of enabling solutions. But the point is that as the economic conditions change and as we see the loan terms change, we have to make sure we’re doing everything we can.
And that also means, Rachelle, that we have to think about lending to women sometimes differently. The notions of credit or collateral are different for some women than they are for other borrowers because sometimes they don’t have the same types of assets that their male counterparts have. And so that’s another creative way and an innovative way that we’re looking at partnering with women entrepreneurs.
RACHELLE AKUFFO: And one thing that you focus on is an inclusive digital economy. What does that mean now in 2023? Especially when you factor in things like AI and how that’s really making sort of a borderless economy when it comes to being inclusive.
SHAMINA SINGH: Yeah, I mean, you know, Rachelle, in some respects, digitization, and digitalization for small business owners, it really has to be table stakes. And so, again, before the pandemic, we saw really good adoption of digital processes.
During the pandemic, I think it became quite clear that if you weren’t able to digitize if you weren’t able to operate in a way that allowed you to meet your customers, sometimes remotely, to offer remote payments in a safe and secure environment, you were going to have a really tough time surviving the pandemic. And we’ve seen that knock-on effect even today that the minimum is digitization of processes and resources. And that’s, actually, one of our — the cornerstones of our strive program globally.
We have a strive, small business signature initiative, where we focus on getting capital that we talked about earlier. Going digital, which is table stakes now, but really making sure that we adapt to the new technologies. And growing your networks and know-how. So we have to think of three parts of the stool to support all small businesses but look at them intricately and differently to make sure that we’re adapting to the needs of women small business owners.
RACHELLE AKUFFO: And so when you look at some things like recession fears that are coming up, sort of another potential shake up for some of these small businesses that maybe would like to hire but aren’t able to find people. And would like more funding but perhaps aren’t able to get it. How are you preparing them in terms of the resources available that they can use?
SHAMINA SINGH: Well, I’d love for any small business owner and for any organization that works with small businesses to really make sure that in the United States, they’re working with CDFIs. And those are Community Development Finance Institutions that are mission led and very close to the small business community. In the sense that sometimes they act as a bridge between banks and the small business owners.
So that if you are in an environment where you need that extra help, you need the time and attention it takes to get that first loan, the CDFI community, the CDFI space in the United States, and the microfinance institution community outside of the United States are really great places to go.
I’ll just give you an example. In the United States, we work with Grameen America. We also work with the Community Reinvestment Fund. We work with Momentus Capital.
When we work with those organizations, and I would encourage you to look at those organizations, they ensure that not only are they providing the training and the wraparound support and services and the accountability but also access to the capital that the small business owner needs. So especially for women, I would definitely advise you to have a look at Grameen America if you’re in the United States and make sure that you connect with the fabulous work that they’re doing.
RACHELLE AKUFFO: Well, I do appreciate you especially laying out the resources because sometimes a lot of people just really don’t know where to start and where to find them. Thank you so much, and congratulations on that milestone there. Shamina Singh, Mastercard Center for inclusive growth president. Thank you for joining us this morning.

CERTIFIED KETO COACH TESTIMONY
“To expand my nutritional health knowledge and make me a better coach, I was looking for a health coaching program that would provide a solid foundation in the science and functional medical aspects of Ketogenic and Carnivore diets, and Supplements. With integrity, this course by the Emmerich’s included many peer reviewed studies, medical articles and presentations to confirm the information that was being taught. Maria and Craig taught me the nutritionally healthy way to coach my clients into a new lifestyle. They share how to overcome overcome obstacles, dispel myths and mistakes which will help my clients succeed. This challenging program is very well done with step by step videos to make large amounts of information manageable. The weekly coaching calls and access to a large database of questions and answers helped me get answers to things I wasn’t sure about. Maria and Craig responded to my questions quickly if I did not find them on the coaches Q&A page.
The meal plans and thousands of recipes I was given access to changed my perspective on what it is to eat healthy and still have delicious options in any food category. Little did I know that this exceptional coaching program would change my health as well. I am no longer on thyroid medication and am no longer pre-diabetic. Maria and Craig are a true inspiration with all the hard work and creativity they put into the program and their recipes. From their teaching, I am grateful to now have the ability to help my clients on a broader level.
If you’re looking for a professional, science based, turn key program to start or enhance your coaching program and your health I would highly recommend Maria & Craig Emmerich’s Keto Adapted coaching program.” Search Camps

“I decided to get certified in keto/carnivore and just wanted to let this group know of the hard work Maria and Craig Emmerich have put into their program. The most impressive part is they share their information with everyone on this group for free. I feel their passion. I’m very excited about making this step into my health and future.
I have been following them for about 6 months after coming from another keto group that carb cycles. It was not working for me. Not only have I lost weight but I have lost pain and can finally workout and not have to take a week off because I’m so exhausted. I’m almost 55 with a c5-c6 neck fusion and I haven’t had a headache in almost 2 months. I had headaches every single day for years. I have only had 1 migraine this year.
Eternally grateful for the information you you both provide.” – Kim
