With high school graduation season in full swing, it is essential to remember that at age 18, parents no longer have the right to make medical and financial decisions for their child, something should happen.

We always recommend that 18-year-olds have simple estate planning documents in place, in the event of incapacity.

If your child goes away to school and has an accident, you want to be able to speak to doctors and medical personnel regarding their care.

Unfortunately, sometimes accidents happen. It is better to be prepared and not need these documents, than to be scrambling and asking a judge for the ability to be involved in your adult child’s medical care.

What documents should an 18-year-old have in place? We typically recommend that they have:

  • A medical durable power of attorney,
  • A HIPAA release,
  • A financial durable power of attorney, and
  • A simple will.

This will make things easier, in the event your child cannot speak on their own behalf.

Having these documents at the ready can eliminate potential issues, there should be an unforeseen incident.

Also, having these fundamental documents in place is a great foundation for future estate planning.

Mon. Ted Cruz’s Telling Call With Fox Business Host Caught On Newly Released Tape

In a November 2020 call between Sen. Ted Cruz and Fox Business host Maria Bartiromo, the Texas Republican said Donald Trump’s allies needed “actual evidence” to support the then-president’s election fraud claims if they wanted their challenges to hold up in court.

“They can’t just be, you know, ‘Somebody tweeted that.’ There’s got to be demonstrable facts that can be laid out with evidence because that’s what a court of law is going to look to ― not just an allegation but actual facts,” he said in a recording of the Nov. 7, 2020, call obtained by MSNBC.

Cruz added that he was “hopeful” that Trump’s personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani, who led the legal push to overturn the 2020 presidential results, “comes on the show tomorrow and he has some of those facts,” and he added, “I hope the the legal team continues to lay out the specific evidence because that’s what it’s going to take to prevail in court.”

Even though no such evidence was produced, Cruz went on to lead an effort to block the certification of President Joe Biden’s win, pushing Trump’s lie that the election had been rife with fraud.

The recording was taken by a former Fox News producer who is singing the network. Abby Grossberg, who worked as a producer for Bartiromo and Tucker Carlson, has accused the network of harassment and alleged it pressured her into giving misleading testimony as part of the $1.6 billion Dominion Voting Systems defamation lawsuit.

Recordings she made of off-air conversations between Fox hosts and their guests, as well as her testimony in the case, reportedly helped spur the network to reach its $787.5 million settlement deal with Dominion. Fox News has denied that account.

Dominion sued Fox News over its coverage of the 2020 election, accusing it of amplifying damaging and false claims that the voting technology company was part of a conspiracy to rig the vote against Trump.

Do You Absolutely Hate Broccoli?

June 7, 2023 · 8:50 AM

If so, it may well be because of your genes according to an article at SBS.com. Particular genes determine whether you can detect a bitter chemical (called PTC) in broccoli and other brassicas like cauliflower and brussels sprouts.

Do You Absolutely Hate Broccoli?
“Free broccoli and carrots in frying”/ CC0 1.0

“On average, about 70% of us can taste something bitter in broccoli or PTC, but those with two copies of the bitter sensitivity gene are closer to 20%, and they are much more likely to hate it.”

US President George HW Bush said in March 1990, “I do not like broccoli. And I haven’t liked it since I was a little kid and my mother made me eat it. And I’m President of the United States and I’m not going to eat any more broccoli!” He banned it on Air Force One.

Most of us at the Parker Compound like broccoli. My wife usually sautes it in olive oil and seasons it with garlic, other herbs and salt.

Can You Prevent a Whistleblower Lawsuit?

When a whistleblower suit is brought against a company or practice, there are usually many warnings that were ignored or not dealt with appropriately. Many times, wrongdoings are brought to light internally first and properly addressing concerns can prevent a lawsuit.

We can help you stay on top of the latest news that affects your everyday life. Subscribe to stay up to date. (To subscribe to our blog ).

Often, the employee who becomes the whistleblower tries to raise the issue internally before going outside the company.

There are also fears of retaliation by many whistleblowers. Fear of retaliation can lead an employee to report wrongdoing to an outside board or entity.

So how do you avoid a whistleblower issue?

While it’s impossible to ensure that you will never have a whistleblower suit on your hands, you can take steps to make sure your employees’ concerns are acknowledged.

First, make sure your employees have a variety of ways to raise their concerns, including an anonymous option.

As part of your regular compliance training, make sure your employees know all the ways to raise issues and let them know that you are want them to come forward with concerns. If your employees bring their concerns forward, it can help you improve your practice, patient care and working relationships.

Let employees know that you take concerns seriously and will fully investigate, and where necessary, remediate concerns.

When we work with practices and companies on their compliance plans, policies and procedures, or employee handbooks, we make sure to put in place robust internal reporting methods.

Stress the importance of open communication to your employees and then follow through. You can’t expect your employees to believe you, if you don’t take the time to actually listen and address concerns.

Busy practices will often have an attorney investigate and address employee concerns, to have impartiality and attorney client privilege. This also lets your employees know you take their concerns seriously, when an outsider is brought in to investigate.

Having open communication with your employees will lead to better working relationships and a better overall company.

4 Subscription Marketing Mistakes to Avoid

Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own.

The subscription economy has been on the rise and will only continue to grow. With the global subscription eCommerce market expected to exhibit a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 65.5% between 2023 and 2028, it’s not a surprise that so many businesses are looking to pivot to the subscription model.

But in addition to creating opportunities, the subscription economy spike is also causing some challenges for DTC founders — namely, in one area: competitor differentiation. That’s why effective marketing is so important for the growth of subscription brands. And while there isn’t a one-size-fits-all subscription marketing strategy, there are a few common mistakes that ecommerce brands would be wise to avoid.

Related: How to Identify and Launch a Subscription Model in Your Existing Business

1. Taking a set-and-forget approach to subscriptions

One of the biggest mistakes subscription brands make is jumping to marketing techniques before considering exactly how you want to go to market with your subscriptions. In other words, a set-and-forget subscription model will sabotage any effective marketing strategy. So strengthening your subscriptions is a wise place to start to lay the foundation for impactful marketing.

There are so many options for brands to tailor their subscription programs directly to their customers’ lifestyles and their products’ intended use. This could be a build-a-box, giftable, sequential or prepaid subscription, to name a few.

Assess the needs of your subscribers and how your product is typically used to choose the strongest subscription offering that adds the most value to your customers.

2. Not designing a subscription-optimized PDP

Your PDP (Product Detail Page) is a very important part of your eCommerce website, as this is where consumers can directly engage with your product and decide if they want to buy it. The PDP is also where consumers can opt to subscribe — making it a stellar (and logical) spot to promote your subscription program. A costly mistake DTC brands make is creating a PDP that doesn’t effectively display the subscription offering or its related benefits.

There are myriad ways that brands can optimize their PDP — whether it’s by strategically setting subscriptions as the default, clearly displaying savings with a strikethrough, or illustrating the many perks that consumers can access by subscribing. It should be blatantly obvious to consumers why they would benefit from a subscription.

3. Underestimating the post-purchase journey

An essential component of subscription marketing is knowing when and how to promote your subscription offering — and it’s a common mistake for newer brands to miss out on optimal chances, particularly after a consumer has made a purchase.

Two obvious cohorts to target are one-time and repeat buyers who have yet to subscribe. Leaning into this subgroup by sending an informative email that outlines the many perks of subscribing can work wonders to grow your subscriber base.

However, communicating with current subscribers — not just one-time buyers — is where the real post-purchase journey can happen. This is a significantly unique component of subscription marketing; it’s equally crucial (if not more so) to advertise to your current subscribers rather than just focusing on acquiring new ones. Forgetting about your most loyal audience is extremely costly; after all, returning customers spend about 67% more than new customers.

Building out a robust customer account portal complete with referrals, loyalty rewards, trending upsells, and exclusive discounts is only one step in maximizing engagement, as you have to ensure that your subscribers are aware of and participate in these engaging touchpoints. Once you have your account portal set up with the LTV-driven features you want, it’s important to lean into messaging that brings subscribers into the portal as much as possible.

One strategy is to invite subscribers via email and SMS messaging to visit their account portals by sending a direct link. Then, in conjunction with this, many brands also choose to send an educational email to inform their audience of the many ways to engage after they’ve subscribed.

4. Keeping Email/SMS marketing impersonal

Your email/SMS strategy is a chance to get highly creative and lean into personalization; it’s not just an outlet for promotions, which is a trap many brands fall into. Some founders are wary of playing up personalization for fear of invading privacy — but most consumers are actually seeking and expecting this kind of individualized treatment from their brands.

83% of consumers reported that they were willing to share information in exchange for a more personalized experience, and 88% of organizations that implemented a personalized approach saw a meaningful increase in sales. In other words, eCommerce businesses that fail to capitalize on this dynamic are missing out on a prime opportunity.

Personalized marketing can vary depending on the type of business you run — but here are some general campaign ideas:

For SMS, this might look like:

  • Notifying subscribers about new products they may like
  • Sending a personalized birthday message with a special perk
  • Sending out order-tracking messages and giving subscribers a chance to manage subscriptions directly in the text thread

For Email, this might look like:

  • A more casual check-in is sent to engaged subscribers to encourage reviews
  • An interactive survey or quiz to collect zero-party data (which can be used to further personalize future messaging)
  • An informative newsletter with recent brand updates, including a “you may like” product recommendation section

Vanderhoof butcher shop named top small business

Brittany and Matt Giesbrecht of The Speckled Sow Butchery & Market earned first place in the business impact category at Small Business BC Awards

The owners of a Vanderhoof butcher shop took home a top honor from the Small Business BC Awards on Sunday.

Brittany and Matt Giesbrecht of The Speckled Sow Butchery & Market earned first place in the business impact category.

The award “recognizes a business that has taken positive action to invest in their community and views social responsibility as an integral part of their success,” the SBBCA said in a statement.

The shop provides a cut and wrap service for domestic and wild game.

“It goes to show that hard work and more hard work really do pay off,” Matt Giesbrecht said in the statement. “The support of your community, family and friends goes a long way.”

Judges commented, “They clearly love the work they do and that inspiration to bring that farm-to-table spirit to Vanderhoof shines. Through their business journey, they have remained committed to serving their community.”

Awards were presented in four categories. To select the winners, 613 nominees across 84 BC communities were narrowed down to the Top 5 Finalists based on more than 74,000 public votes and written responses judged by business experts. Finalists proceeded to pitch their businesses to a panel of BC business leaders, who then selected the winner of each award category.

“For twenty years, the Small Business BC Awards has offered a platform for entrepreneurs to showcase their drive and determination while receiving the recognition they so greatly deserve,” said SBBC CEO Tom Conway. “These are some of the most creative, passionate and resilient people and it’s truly our honor to share their stories through the Small Business BC Awards.”
