Can You Protect Your Child’s Inheritance From Their Spouse?

Many of our clients want to plan for their children’s future, when drafting their estate plans. However, some of our clients are concerned about their child’s spouse accessing the inheritance.

While each client has different concerns and requires tailored estate planning, one question we often hear relates to protecting the inheritance of the spouse of their child.

So can inheritance be protected from a spouse of your child?

Yes, there are many ways to try to protect inheritance.

While every situation is different, there are steps that can be taken to try to keep the money for your child – and not their spouse.

One way to attempt to protect the money is to instruct the child as to how to handle inheritance of money upon receipt.

Tell your child to hold on to any documentation that specifies that the inheritance is for the child, and not to the child and their spouse. Keeping the inheritance in a separate account can insulate it further.

One of the best ways to protect inheritance is by putting a language in your trust that specifies how it is to be distributed.

An incredibly useful tool in protecting inheritance is a trust for your child, inside your trust. This is often referred to as a sub-trust.

If you put your child’s money into a sub-trust within your trust, you can stagger their distribution and put language in place about how they can access their inheritance.

If you stagger their distribution so that they receive chunks at certain ages, if they get divorced, hopefully they will still have the remaining distributions following their divorce.

Prior to a distribution set, you can provide guidance to the trustee so that they know when they can give money to your child for a variety of purposes.

Tailored language in your trust is one of the best ways to potentially protect the inheritance of money, especially if divorce is on the horizon.

Utilizing a trust, as opposed to a will or dying interest, also keeps the terms private. If your child is estranged from their spouse, they might not even be aware of the trust and distribution.

If your child is not yet married, consult an attorney about a pre-nuptial agreement when the time comes. This agreement can plan for future inheritance.

Gay Water launches to support LGBTQ2S+ people

In a sea of canned cocktails, Gay Water wants to stand out.

Launching Thursday is a brightly colored canned vodka and soda beverage that proudly displays who it’s for, instead of backing off from support for the LGBTQ2S+ community as other companies have done in recent months. In other words, where Bud Light has buckled under pressure as bigotry grows against the LGBTQ2S+ community, Gay Water’s creator Spencer Hoddeson wants his new boozy brand to be the antithesis of that.

“The key issue that Bud Light tapped into was the fact that they didn’t understand their core audience and know enough about them,” Hoddeson, a gay man, told CNN about the controversy that began when the Anheuser-Busch beer brand sent influencer Dylan Mulvaney a can of beer. “They just went silent and I think in 2023, you have to be communicating because people communicate themselves if they’re not hearing from you.”

Gay Water, however, is out and proud. The canned cocktail is named after a colloquialism given to the popular mixed drink (vodka and soda) ordered at bars by the gay community. It’s also one of the few openly queer-owned alcohol brands, which Hoddeson said sparked him to create because he wanted more representation in the category.

“We’re creating a brand that creates representation, particularly in spaces where representation is lacking like liquor stores, bars, restaurants and grocery stores,” he said. “Putting a product with the word gay in the title is a representation of itself,” which he hopes reclaims the word from the negativity it’s sometimes associated with.

He thought of creating Gay Water about a year ago while on a vacation with his friend who had got a job within the beverage industry. The two chatted about the limited number of gay people within it, and with Hoddeson burnt out from his traditional day job in tech, started the canned cocktail.

Big online

Hoddeson built up a strong social media following on TikTok and Instagram during Covid-19 and is using some of the money from that (as well as from friends and family) to help fund Gay Water. He worked together with a queer designer creating the colorful packaging, which pulls inspiration from ’90s Nickelodeon shows and pop art.

“I wanted to build something that is queer and part of the community, but it isn’t necessarily the rainbows and unicorns that you see all around with pride,” he said. “Gay is an umbrella term and the idea behind the brand is to be as inclusive as possible, which means we want allies, we want straight people to be part of this community we’re building.”

For now, Gay Water is sold largely online (with a few retailers) and comes in four sugar-free flavors — watermelon, lime, peach and grapefruit — at launch. Six-packs with a single flavor cost $18.25 and 12-packs with a variety of flavors cost $36.50.

Although spiked seltzers have cooled off with drinkers, spirit-based drinks, like High Noon, have grown in popularity. And despite the hundreds of brands on shelves (after all, a canned vodka soda isn’t something unique anymore), Hoddeson said it’s “exactly the right time” to join the space.

“When I look at a lot of brands entering the market right now, what they’re missing is the idea of who their audience is and who their community will be rather than what their product is,” he said.

Canned cocktail boom

Sales of premixed cocktails including surged about 36% last year, making it a $2.2 billion industry according to figures from the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States.

Gay Water might not have the deep pockets compared to its competitors, like White Claw, but “even at small scale, companies of many sizes are having success making spirit-based seltzers and premixed cocktails,” Bryan Roth, an analyst for Feel Goods Company and editor of the alcohol beverage newsletter, Sightlines+, told CNN.

“There’s lots of space in the spirit-based seltzer category in which Gay Water can play, especially if the brand can offer a cultural or emotional connection that will feel more exciting than the prospect of another pineapple-flavoured vodka seltzer from national or international corporations,” Roth said. “It’s a top-heavy category where niches can be carved out in a fashion similar to craft beer.”

Of course, other drinks use the word “gay,” too, including Gay Beer and So Gay Rosé, Hoddeson noted, which are also trying to reach the queer community and offer them an alternative in the straight-dominated space.

Hoddeon said there’s a lot of “straight-coded brands that try to reach the audience and that’s what Bud Light did. There’s clearly a desire for folks to have queer customers they just don’t know the right way to go about it.”

Raspberry Walnut Salad with Chicken

My favorite Raspberry Walnut Salad with Chicken made with leafy greens, fresh raspberries, shredded chicken, chopped walnuts, and sliced red onions all tossed with a creamy raspberry vinaigrette!

My favorite Raspberry Walnut Salad with Chicken made with leafy greens, fresh raspberries, shredded chicken, chopped walnuts, and sliced red onions all tossed with a creamy raspberry vinaigrette!

This salad truly has all my favorite components! Sweet and tart raspberries, leafy greens, tender shredded chicken, savory red onions, crunchy walnuts and drizzled with the most delicious raspberry vinaigrette! So delicious and super simple to throw together.

You can easily customize this salad to your liking as well. Sprinkle in a little goat cheese or feta cheese, swap out the raspberries for strawberries, blueberries or other fruit of your choice, add in some avocado slices or dried cranberries, and you could even substitute the chopped walnuts for pecans, almonds or cashews.

My favorite Raspberry Walnut Salad with Chicken made with leafy greens, fresh raspberries, shredded chicken, chopped walnuts, and sliced red onions all tossed with a creamy raspberry vinaigrette!

Ingredients You’ll Need

  • Mixed greens – I used a mixture of arugula, baby kale and fresh baby spinach leaves, but feel free to use whatever leafy green lettuce you prefer.
  • Chicken – I love making this with rotisserie chicken because it’s quick, easy and adds a boost of protein to this salad! You could also use cubed chicken breasts, leftover shredded chicken or even canned chicken would work.
  • Raspberries – raspberries are loaded with Vitamin C and antioxidants, but they also taste incredible in this salad. You could also use strawberries, blueberries or even chopped apples or pears.
  • Red onions – adds a nice savory flavor to the salad and I cut the onion into thin slices
  • Walnuts – these add a nice crunch to the salad, but you can also use chopped pecans, almonds or cashews
  • Raspberry Vinaigrette – made with a combination of raspberries, red wine vinegar, balsamic vinegar, olive oil, honey, shallots and salt/pepper

Easy Raspberry Vinaigrette

I absolutely love the flavor and creaminess in this super simple raspberry walnut vinaigrette! Not only does this dressing add a beautiful vibrant color to your salad, but it is easily made with just a few simple ingredients – raspberries, red wine vinegar, a little balsamic vinegar, olive oil, honey (or maple syrup), shallots and salt / pepper.

I like to make this right in my blender (or food processor) and it comes together in just minutes. You can use fresh or frozen raspberries for this as well! I always try to make my own salad dressings right at home because I typically already have all the ingredients on hand in my pantry or fridge, it’s budget-friendly and honestly just tastes so much better than the bottled stuff from the store.

Can this Salad be Prepped in Advance?

Absolutely! In fact I love prepping everything in advance so that I can easily throw this salad together for an easy lunch or as a delicious side dish with my dinner. In order for the lettuce to stay fresh and prevent wilting, I like to store everything in separate containers until I’m ready to assemble and toss together.

  • Wash and store the raspberries in a sealed container in the fridge and thinly slice the red onion storing in a sealed baggy or container.
  • Shred some cooked rotisserie chicken (or use any other left over chicken you may have on hand) and store separately in the fridge.
  • Blend together the ingredients for the raspberry vinaigrette and store in a sealed mason jar in the fridge. Just before serving, let the dressing sit at room temperature for about 10 minutes to let the oil become liquid again and give the dressing a good shake or whisk to mix everything together. The vinaigrette will last up to a week in the fridge.

15 Best Small Business Ideas for 2023

best small business

There are so many great small business ideas out there that it can be tough to choose which one to pursue. And if you’re currently employed full-time, it can be even tougher to find the time to start a business on the side.

But it is possible. I know firsthand because I’ve done it myself. In fact, some of the best businesses are started by people who are already working full time.

If you’re feeling motivated to start a business in 2023 but don’t know where to start, here are 15 great business ideas you can pursue.

1. Start a blog

If you’re passionate about a certain topic, why not start a blog about it? You can share your knowledge and expertise with the world, and if you’re lucky, you might even be able to make some serious money from your blog through advertising or affiliate marketing.

On average, serious bloggers make around $45,000 a year. Keep in mind that the first six months is a building phase of creating content, driving traffic and building your following. The real income tends to kick in during the second six months, with the $45,000 a year figure for an established blog.

One of the best things about blogging is that it’s relatively inexpensive and can be done in your spare time.

2. Start an e-commerce business

If you’re good at finding products that people want to buy online, an e-commerce business could be for you. You can sell just about anything, from physical goods to digital products. And the best part is, you can get started without investing a lot of money.

The trick is to find products you can purchase for a low amount, sell for substantially more and that people want to buy from you.

T-shirts and other personalized items can work really well for this and entire 6 figure businesses have been built with a few super catchy and timely t-shirt slogans along with good graphics and marketing.

3. Start a service business

If you have a particular skill or talent that you can offer others, why not start a service business? You can offer your services to clients on a freelance basis, or you can even start your own service-based business.

If you are particularly good at any aspect of online marketing, for example, then this could be a good fit for you. Content creation, graphic design, reputation management and business coaching are all good possibilities.

Business Ideas

4. Start a subscription box business

If you’re looking for a unique business idea, why not start a subscription box business? You can curate boxes of products based on a theme and people can subscribe to receive them on a monthly or quarterly basis. This is a great way to build a loyal customer base and generate some recurring revenue.

I’ve seen this work in crafting niches such as crochet and knitting, as well as pet niches, personal care items and even snack foods.

5. Start a drop shipping business

If you don’t want to deal with the hassle of shipping products yourself, you can always start a drop shipping business. This type of business allows you to sell products without having to worry about inventory or shipping. Instead, when a customer orders a product from your store or from Amazon, you simply order it from your supplier and have it shipped directly to the customer.

The key here is to identify savvy product opportunities. Finding products from overseas that will sell well while giving you a good profit margin will take some research, but it can be well worth it.

6. Start an affiliate marketing website

If you’re good at driving traffic to websites, you could start an affiliate marketing website. This type of site earns revenue by directing visitors to other websites via your affiliate link where they can make purchases. As an affiliate, you earn a commission on every sale that you refer.

Your first step is to choose a niche. Find products that you want to promote in that niche and then create content to bring in prospects. Build your list and market these affiliate products to your list as well as on your website.

7. Start a social media marketing agency

If you’re good at marketing on social media, you can start your own social media marketing agency. You can help businesses grow their online following and get more leads and sales from their social media accounts.

8. Start writing ebooks

The beauty of ebooks is that while content matters, length does not. As long as you deliver on the promise of the title, your ebook can be of almost any length. This means that if you get busy and focus, you could possibly write a new ebook every month or two. Heck, I’ve known people who wrote their first ebook over a two-day weekend.

Use each ebook to recommend the other ebooks as well as any services you provide.

In fact, an ebook can be a great way to get customers for your service. For example, if you’re a web designer and you write the book on web design, clients are going to be much more eager to hire you for your services.

9. Start teaching online courses

If you’re an expert then there is likely an audience willing to pay to learn what you know. Teachable is perhaps the easiest and most affordable platform to host your course and they have plenty of free resources to help you get started.

10. Start an SEO agency

If you’re good at optimizing websites for search engines, you can start your own SEO agency. You can help businesses improve their ranking in search results and get more traffic to their website.

11. Start a web design agency

If you’re good at designing websites, you can start your own web design agency. You can help businesses create beautiful and functional websites and entire sales funnels that convert visitors into customers.

12. Start a content marketing agency

If you’re good at creating compelling content, you could start your own content marketing agency. You can help businesses attract more website visitors and convert them into customers with high-quality content.

13. Start Instagram marketing

Build a loyal following on Instagram and could get deals with major brands to promote their products and services related to your content. If you have enough followers, you can charge $500 to $5000 or more per post.

14. Start an online coaching business

This can be the perfect way to teach beginners in your field. One-on-one coaching is a dependable side business that can grow into a full time income. If you charge by the hour, then you’ll want to use a system like Teamwork to keep track of billable hours while managing client projects at the same time.

In addition to helping you give others, you can also build an online community using a private Facebook group or Slack for your clients to interact and learn from each other.

15. Start a podcast

If you enjoy telling stories, chatting and doing interviews then this is a great opportunity for you to build an audience around a specific topic. You can use your podcast to get sponsors, to promote affiliate products or your own products. Even a new podcast with a built-in audience or a podcast that is building a strong audience can secure advertisers at $200 to $500 per 90 second slot.

You can research and create your own content, or you can interview experts on your podcast. Be sure to do plenty of storytelling to get and keep your audience, as well as conveying your enthusiasm for your topic, using emotion and humor to keep listeners coming back for more.

Of course, these are just a few ideas to get you started. There are endless possibilities when it comes to starting your own business. So, if you’re feeling motivated, take the first step and see where it takes you!

  • Heat a large 12 inch non-stick pan to medium heat. Lightly spray with avocado oil spray and dab it with a paper towel. Pour 1/4 cup of batter onto the pan and tilt the pan to spread the batter all over the pan in and so it is a very thin crepe. Once the batter has set and is almost cooked through, gently flip the crepe (I used my fingers but be careful not to burn yourself). Cook another 30-60 seconds. Make sure the crepes don’t brown at all.

Rainbow Orzo Salad – Eat Yourself Skinny

This Rainbow Orzo Salad makes the perfect summer side dish! Loaded with colorful veggies, fresh herbs and tender orzo pasta, all tossed together with a delicious lemon herb dressing and easily made in just minutes!

This Rainbow Orzo Salad makes the perfect summer side dish! Loaded with colorful veggies, fresh herbs and tender orzo pasta, all tossed together with a delicious lemon herb dressing and easily made in just minutes!

If you are looking for a fresh and easy summer side dish, then look no further! This Rainbow Orzo Salad is full of colorful veggies, fresh herbs, and tender orzo pasta all tossed in the most delicious lemon herb dressing! This orzo pasta salad is one of my absolute favorite go-to dishes in the warmer months and is one I love making for a crowd. The veggies add such a nice crunch to this salad and the orzo soaks up all that delicious lemon flavor from the dressing as it marinates. Such a great side dish when grilling chicken, fish and steak or you could even enjoy this all on its own for lunch.

This entire meal can easily be made in under 30 minutes and the most time consuming part is honestly all of the chopping. I really like to finely chop all the veggies as I think it makes the salad look so much better. This recipe uses so much delicious summer produce and is easily customizable to your liking.

This Rainbow Orzo Salad makes the perfect summer side dish! Loaded with colorful veggies, fresh herbs and tender orzo pasta, all tossed together with a delicious lemon herb dressing and easily made in just minutes!

Ingredients You’ll Need

  • Orzo pasta – I love the light taste of orzo in this salad, but feel free to use any type of small pasta
  • Veggies – I used a combination of red bell pepper, orange bell pepper, cucumber, red onion, and fresh corn, but you can also use tomatoes, zucchini, or other veggies
  • Fresh herbs – a delicious combination of fresh parsley and fresh basil
  • Sea salt + ground pepper – for seasoning
  • Lemon Herb Dressing – see recipe below!

How to Make Rainbow Orzo Salad

One of the many reasons I make this Rainbow Orzo Salad so much is because of how simple it is to throw together! Here’s how I make it in just 5 easy steps:

  1. Chop your veggies and herbs. This might be the most time-consuming part, but hey play that podcast or blast some music – I promise it’s worth all the chopping! I like to try to finely chop all the veggies because I think the salad just looks better visually and is more enjoyable to eat. You’ll also want to chop the fresh basil and parsley as well.
  2. Cook the orzo. Bring your water to a boil, sprinkle in some salt, and cook the orzo according to the package directions until al dente. Make sure to stir ever so often to prevent the orzo from clumping. Drain the orzo in a colander and run cold water over it until cooled.
  3. Make the dressing. While the orzo is cooking, you can whip up this dressing! Simply whisk together the olive oil, fresh lemon juice, red wine vinegar, Dijon mustard, garlic, oregano and salt/pepper in a jar or bowl and set aside until ready to use. Seriously SO good and is a dressing I have used for so many different meals! It honestly deserves its own post.
  4. Toss the salad. Mix together the cooked orzo, chopped veggies and fresh herbs in a large bowl and drizzle the whole thing with the lemon herb dressing. Give it a good toss, season with additional salt and pepper as needed. Serve immediately or marinate for a few hours before serving (I highly recommend this!)
  5. Marinate. Cover the orzo salad and place it in the fridge allowing the flavors to marinate for a few hours or even overnight. Serve and enjoy!

Homemade Lemon Herb Dressing

I can’t tell you how much I love this dressing. Bright lemony flavour, tangy Dijon mustard, delicious garlic and fresh herbs really make this the perfect dressing for this orzo salad because it tastes amazing and quickly gets absorbed by all the pasta and veggies! SO. MUCH. FLAVORS. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Olive oil – I like to use a good olive oil that doesn’t have to be expensive, just make sure it’s cold-pressed and organic for the most flavor (in my opinion)
  • Lemons – I just love the bright, fresh flavor fresh lemon juice brings to this dressing. Feel free to add a little bit of the zest too for even more lemon flavor!
  • Red wine vinegar – this adds a nice tangy flavor that goes perfect with the olive oil and lemon juice, but feel free to use apple cider vinegar or white vinegar if that’s what you have on hand
  • Dijon mustard – this adds a little zip and helps to emulsify the dressing
  • Garlic – I always like to use fresh garlic in my salad dressings, but a 1/4 teaspoon of dried minced garlic or garlic powder will work if that’s all you have
  • Seasonings – a delicious combination of dried oregano, salt and pepper

Prepping and Storage

The great thing about this rainbow orzo salad is that it tastes great warm OR cold and will last up to 3 to 4 days in your fridge. Just make sure to store any leftovers in a sealed, airtight container in the refrigerator. You can easily prepare this orzo pasta salad ahead of time by chopping up all your veggies and making the salad dressing up to a day before making. I promise you, this salad tastes even better on the second day!

This Rainbow Orzo Salad makes the perfect summer side dish! Loaded with colorful veggies, fresh herbs and tender orzo pasta, all tossed together with a delicious lemon herb dressing and easily made in just minutes!

If you do make this orzo salad recipe ahead of time, make sure to reserve a little bit of dressing to toss right before serving. The noodles and veggies will soak up a ton of the dressing (which is great for flavor!!), but you’ll want to freshen it up with more dressing when it’s ready to serve.

Substitutions & Variations

  • If you don’t have any orzo on hand, feel free to use any other type of pasta in a small shape or you could swap it with quinoa, rice or farro.
  • You can also customize this salad to your liking by using a variety of different vegetables such as zucchini, grape or cherry tomatoes, kalamata olives, broccoli, etc. and you could also mix in some chopped greens such as spinach, kale or arugula.
  • Sprinkle in some feta cheese or goat cheese for a boost of flavor and to make this orzo salad creamier.
  • Add in some protein such as shredded chicken, salmon, and shrimp or keep this salad vegetarian and add in chickpeas, white beans, pine nuts or other chopped nuts.
  • Switch up the dressings with whatever you like best! This balsamic dressing would taste amazing in this salad or even a creamier tahini dressing.

A Will from 2014 and two Wills from 2010 were found in Ms. Franklin’s home by her niece, following her death. The Wills were not the same and led to a dispute among her family as to which Will should be followed by the probate court.

Both of the 2010 Wills were found in a locked cabinet, however, the 2014 Will was found in a spiral notebook under couch cushions. The 2014 will be difficult to decipher and has words scratched out.
